Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Juliapp, the community safety network.

General

What is Juliapp?
Juliapp is a community safety network that lets you report incidents, stay informed about what is happening around you, and help each other — all in real time. Think of it as a living safety map powered by the people who use it.
Is Juliapp free?
Yes. All core features are completely free to use. Juliapp Pro is coming soon and will introduce advanced features for users who want even more from the platform.
What cities does Juliapp work in?
Juliapp works worldwide. You can report incidents and view the safety map from anywhere. Transit routing is currently available for Paris (powered by IDFM Navitia). Walk, bike, and drive routing works everywhere via OSRM.
Is Juliapp available on iOS and Android?
Juliapp is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you install it directly from your browser — no app store needed. Once installed, it works just like a native app with its own icon, full-screen mode, and offline support.
What is Julia?
Julia is Juliapp's AI safety assistant. She can answer questions about your neighborhood safety, help plan safe routes, and provide real-time guidance. Julia uses a local AI model for privacy — your conversations stay on-device when possible, with a cloud fallback only when needed.

Safety & Reporting

How do I report an incident?
Tap the + button on the map, fill in the details (type of incident, description, severity), and submit. Reports also work offline — they are queued and automatically synced when you are back online.
What happens after I report?
Your report appears as a pin on the map visible to nearby users. Other people can confirm the incident, add their own stories, or follow it for updates. The more confirmations a pin receives, the higher its trust score.
Can I report anonymously?
Your display name is shown alongside reports, but you can set any display name you like. No real name, phone number, or government ID is required to use Juliapp.
What is the SOS button?
The SOS button is an emergency broadcast feature. Press and hold it to activate. Once triggered, your live location trail appears on every nearby user's map, and your trusted contacts are immediately notified.
What if I accidentally trigger SOS?
There is a countdown before SOS activates, giving you time to cancel. If it does activate by mistake, you can cancel it at any time from the active SOS panel.
How do I verify my identity?
Go to My Juliapp > Profile and follow the verification steps. Verified users receive a badge next to their name, which increases trust in their reports and interactions.

Privacy & Data

What data does Juliapp collect?
Juliapp collects your location (only while using the app), the reports you create, and basic profile information. There is no third-party tracking, no analytics scripts, and no advertising SDKs.
Where is my data stored?
All data is stored on EU servers via Supabase (PostgreSQL). The infrastructure is fully GDPR compliant.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. Go to Settings > Privacy & Data > Delete my account. This will permanently remove your profile, reports, and all associated data.
Does Juliapp sell my data?
No. Never. Juliapp has no third-party analytics, no ads, and no data sales. Your data belongs to you.
What cookies does Juliapp use?
Only essential cookies: authentication session, language preference, and theme preference. No tracking or marketing cookies. For full details, see our Cookie Policy.

What is biometric authentication?
Juliapp supports Touch ID, Face ID, and Windows Hello to confirm sensitive actions like changing your email or deleting your account. Biometric data never leaves your device. SOS is intentionally never gated by biometrics.

Trip Planner

How does the trip planner work?
Enter your destination, choose a transport mode (walk, bike, drive, or transit), and view available routes with safety information overlaid. Start a guided trip and get real-time ETA, turn-by-turn directions, and safety alerts along the way.
What is danger-aware routing?
For walk and bike modes, Juliapp checks whether your route passes through areas with recent incidents. If it does, the app suggests safer alternative routes so you can avoid those zones.
Does transit routing work outside Paris?
Transit routing currently supports Paris only, powered by the IDFM Navitia API. Walk, bike, and drive routing works everywhere in the world via OSRM. More transit cities are planned.
Can I save favorite routes?
Yes. Tap the heart icon on any route card to save it to your favorites for quick access later.

Communities

How do I join a community?
Go to the Communities tab, browse or search for groups near you, and request to join. Community admins will review your request.
Can I create my own community?
Yes. You can create a private safety group for your neighborhood, campus, workplace, or any other group. Invite members and manage the community from the admin panel.
What are place notes?
Place notes are personal markers you can drop on the map. Long-press for 2 seconds anywhere on the map to create one. They are private by default — only you can see them unless you choose to share.

Technical

Does Juliapp work offline?
Yes. Reports created while offline are queued locally and automatically synced to the server when your connection is restored. The map and previously loaded data remain accessible offline as well.
How do I enable notifications?
Juliapp will prompt you to enable notifications when relevant. You can also manage them manually under Settings > Notifications. Note that SOS alerts are always on and cannot be disabled for safety reasons.
How do I install the app?
On iOS: Open Juliapp in Safari, tap the Share button, then tap “Add to Home Screen.”
On Android: Open Juliapp in Chrome and tap “Install app” from the menu or the prompt banner.
On desktop: Click the install icon in your browser’s address bar.
How does Julia's AI work?
Julia uses a hybrid AI architecture: a fine-tuned local model processes your requests first for maximum privacy and speed. When the local model can't provide a confident answer, it falls back to a cloud-based model (Claude by Anthropic).
